FAI SUMMER SOCCER SCHOOL IN BLARNEY

JULY 14-18

For the 5th consecutive year, Blarney United will host an FAI Summer Soccer School in O'Shea Park. Cost is €99 per child. One change this year is that there will be no "walk -ons" permitted. So my advise is to book early since the club will be unable to add extra children once the camp is full. The only method for booking is via the FAI website www.fai.ie or via the call centre on 1890-653653.

Sat, 11/Nov: Int Cup: Avondale 3, Blarney SenAs 2, Avondale  Park. Pat Buckley

Holders Avondale rode out a late storm from Blarney at Avondale Park last Saturday to book their place in the FAI Intermediate Cup third round. Blarney scored their two goals in a gripping final 10 minutes, threatening to undo Avondale's good work in the preceding 80. John  Hogan and Jeremy O'Sullivan caused some frayed nerves on the Avondale bench towards the end as each hit the net in quick succession. But it was not enough and the visitors were left to rue Steven Jennings'' unsuccessful first - half penalty, saved by Brendan O'Connell. Jennings has had better days at the office- the defender was later given a straight red card. A tangle of legs with Welch saw the Avondale striker hit the ground when through on goal on the 79th minute, a decision that prompted furious protests from the away bench. It was the second dismissal of the game - Mark Horgan received his marching orders earlier, on 52 minutes, for throwing the ball at an opponent. Against 11 and 10 men, the hosts were irresistible. With Danny Kelly in vintage form and David Welch no slouch, Avondale posed a constant threat. And yet they had to rely on two set pieces for their opening double either side of half time. The first came on 36 minutes when Mark O'Sullivan stole inside a packed Blarney penalty box to nod home Michael Kiernan's throw. O'Sullivan did it again three minutes after half - time, nodding a looping header beyond Collins into the top corner from Ward's free kick. That goal, making it 2-0, set up a comfortable enough 2nd half for his side. Only then, with Blarney committing players up the field, were the hosts granted the space they could exploit. A man up, Blarney got little joy out of Avondale's defence, although Corkery came close after a useful ball from Jeremy O'Sullivan whose return from injury gave Blarney more of a presence up front, allowing O'Leary to fill the midfield void left by Mark Clifford's injury. At the other end Avondale were rampant. Collins was forced into a succession of saves, including one magnificent double stop from Welch. The former Everton player headed on a corner to set O'Sullivan up on the hour mark, but the midfielder surprised everyone by heading over inside the six - yard box, missing out on a hat - trick. Kelly created what proved the vital third turning the full back inside out on the wing before squaring for Karl Caulfield to finish adroitly past Collins. Then came the late Blarney deluge. O'Leary won free on the left. Sub Eddie Lyons swung it in and John Hogan headed home for 3-1. A consolation, so everyone thought. But there was time for Jeremy O'Sullivan to close the gap to a single goal. He shot over his own shoulder into the far corner, after another Lyons assist. Was there to be another twist to the pair's Intermediate Cup saga, following their 2006 final meeting? It was not to be. Avondale steadied their nerves and held out keeping the dream alive of FAI Intermediate honours for a third successive season. Courtesy: Darragh Murphy, Evening Echo.

Sun 3/Nov: MSL Prem Divn: Blarney SenAs 1, Passage 1, O'Shea Park. Gene Stephens 2:30pm

Passage came from a goal down with just 10 men to earn a well - deserved point against Blarney at O'Shea Park on Sunday. As the old cliché goes, this was a game of two halves. Blarney dominated the first and looked good for the lead at the interval. However Passage never gave up the ghost and battled their way back into the game despite losing Simon McGarry early in the second half for an off - the - ball incident. In truth, Blarney just couldn't cope with Passage's extraordinary commitment during a second period they should have dominated. Their dominance in the first period was typical of the fast - flowing football which Blarney have become accustomed to and they could have taken the lead as early as the third minute. Ray O'Leary  held off Garry Prout while bursting through the middle, but his shot from just outside the box was taken well by Daniel O'Leary driving low to his right. Blarney looked well in control of the game and took a deserved lead on 12 minutes when O'Leary took advantage of some indecisive defending in the Passage area. When the ball eventually broke free he fired a low rocket which his namesake managed to get hands to , to push out. But it was clear to all that the ball had crossed the line and referee Gene Stephens had no hesitation in awarding the goal. Blarney retained the attacking emphasis as they drove forward with Edwin Buckley looking especially menacing drifting in and out from the wings. O'Leary was as industrious as ever, while Nigel Fleming was always a threat sauntering into the box for set pieces. However, to their credit, Passage held tough and weathered the storm. their patience was nearly  rewarded on 22 minutes when Pat Coakley took advantage of some indecisive defending and sprinted through the heard of Blarney's defence, but his shot from just inside the box lacked power and was gratefully collected by Paul Collins. Blarney were determined not to let the visitors get into the game and laid siege on the Passage box for the next ten minutes, creating some good chances through Mark Clifford and Lenny Lynch to double their lead. The pace of the game seemed to take its toll on Blarney towards the end of the half and Passage finished the stronger, coming close to drawing level through McGarry and then Aidan Butler. The visitors could have drawn level after the restart when Coakley trapped the ball on his chest and volleyed superbly, but Collins made a fine save and collected the ball at the second attempt. Blarney should have doubled their lead just a minute later when O'Leary fizzed in a fine ball to Clifford, but somehow he blasted the ball over from six yards out. McGarry was given his marching orders shortly after and you felt there was only going to be one winner. However, Passage dug deep. O'Leary was picking out the front two from kick outs and James O'Leary and Larry Lee were bursting forward from the middle to support. They were rewarded for their industrious play on 70 minutes when Gavin O'Flaherty made a rare venture forward and fired a low drive from just outside the box. Collins spilled the well struck shot and Butler was quickest to react and squeezed the ball in from an acute angle. Blarney were in shock after the equalizer, but they did have the better of chances to snatch a winner with Buckley and Fleming having late chances to seal all three points. But Passage held tough and deserved a point from the game. Courtesy: Steve Dinan, Evening Echo.

Sat 27/Oct: MSL Prem Divn: Blarney SenAs 2, UCC 2, The Farm

Blarney showed their fighting spirit last Saturday, turning a 2-0 deficit around in a remarkable premier league game at the farm. Brian Murray's side snatched a point in a match dominated by a ferocious wind. Despite the elements, or maybe because of them, both sides carved open some fine moves and four excellent goals. The timing of the goals wasn't surprising - with the wind in their favour early on, UCC struck twice in the first - half through Sean Heneghan, who beat Paul Collins at the end of two almost identical moves. Two - nil down at the break, Blarney dragged themselves back into the game 16 minutes into the second half through John Hogan, and put the seal on a tremendous comeback when captain Ray O'Leary slid home a late equaliser. The visitors could have taken the lead soon after but the same wind that helped stop UCC gaining a foothold in the second half prevented substitute Danny Corkery from getting on the end of an O'Leary inside pass. In a tremendous finish to a game never lacking in excitement, UCC almost gained the lead at the other end on 89 minutes, but Collins  got down to stop Richard Ryan's close - range effort, and saw Padraig O'Brien's rebound trickle wide. The first half saw plenty of that kind of action from the students, whose dominance appeared under threat when Blarney's John Hogan lobbed O'Regan who recovered in time to gather safely. Otherwise it was all UCC. Fed by Heneghan in midfield, Shane Hegarty and Daniel Duggan strung some wonderful moves together up front. They took just 15 minutes to grab the lead. Duggan fed Heneghan who skipped past Aidan Leahy before firing powerful across the keeper to the net. Hegarty forced a fine save after from Collins after a great cross from O'Brien. Against a hard - working UCC, Blarney weren't having it easy at the back and fell to another Heneghan strike on 34 minutes. The midfielder was again teed - up by Duggan, who dispossessed the Blarney defender before laying it off from his team mate to blast it off the far post. Blarney rallied before the break, but the second half really saw them take off. Hogan fired an early shot across the students bow minutes after the break with a volley just wide of the far post. Minutes later O'Leary crossed to a queue at the back post, none of whom could convert. It was a lucky escape for UCC, but their fortune ran out minutes later when Lenny Lynch, breaking free, rolled a square ball across for Hogan to make it 2-1 a minute before the hour mark. It was all Blarney. O'Leary brought a good save from O'Regan and then Edwin Buckley, their substitute, headed wide. As the rain tightened its grip on proceedings, the visitors finally cracked the nut on 79 minutes. O'Leary, fittingly, scored the equaliser after substitute Danny Corkery chased down the defender and played him through to side foot home for a deserved point.. Final score: UCC 2, Blarney 2. Sat, 13th Oct U11: MSL Donie Forde Semi Final: Blarney SenAs 0, Rockmount 2. O'Shea Park, Grass. 2pm

Rockmount Qualified for the final of the Donie Forde Cup final thanks to a 2-0 victory over Blarney SenAs at O'Shea Park. The reigning MSL Champions were in control for most of the ninety minutes and their winning margin would have been greater had it not been for the heroics of Blarney keeper Paul Collins. The Rockies took the lead in the 17th minute. A sweeping move down the left saw Ruairi Beechinor pick out Pat Keane, whose powerful header was brilliantly saved by Collins. But Keane was on hand to slot home the rebound. Ross O'Callaghan came close to increasing his team's advantage - but his well struck effort was tipped over the bar by Collins. Rockmount's second and decisive goal arrived midway through the second half. Willie Byrne's corner was touched on by Pat Oldham to Stephen Yelverton who bundled the ball home from close range. Blarney did cause the visitor's problems from set pieces, but Rockmount finished comfortable winners and will now face either Avondale or Everton in the final. Courtesy: Pete Ledwith.

29/Sept Donie Forde Trophy Qtr Finals: Blarney SenAs 2, Leeds 0, O'Shea Park, 2pm T. Murphy

Courtesy - Peter Ledwith... Blarney United advanced to the last four of the Donie Forde Trophy, by defeating Leeds 2-0 at sunny O’Shea Park on Saturday. But the premier side were made fight all the way by a dogged Leeds side, which play their football in the first division.
