FAI SUMMER SOCCER SCHOOL IN BLARNEY

JULY 14-18

For the 5th consecutive year, Blarney United will host an FAI Summer Soccer School in O'Shea Park. Cost is €99 per child. One change this year is that there will be no "walk -ons" permitted. So my advise is to book early since the club will be unable to add extra children once the camp is full. The only method for booking is via the FAI website www.fai.ie or via the call centre on 1890-653653.

Recent Match Reports

Sat, Mar 1st: U11 Divn 6: Blarney U11Bs 0, Kinsale 3. O'Shea Park, L. Roche

For 50mins, Blarney were well in this game, going out, doing what they were asked to do and playing good football. The first half saw both teams going end to end but it was Blarney who had the majority of chances. Shaun, Terry and Anto all had shots on goal but Blarney simply did not have the rub of the green needed against the top of the table team. The old phrase "if you don’t take your chances you get punished" and on the stroke of half time Kinsale took their one chance to take the lead into the break.

In the second half Blarney knew they would have to take a few chances if they were to get back in the game. It nearly paid off too when Jamie's shot flew just over the bar to so nearly bring his team back into the game. Kinsale were growing in strength and in the final 10 got 2 more goals to kill the game. Blarney showed that when they played good football they were as good as anyone and need to show this same improvement in skill for the last two league games. Best on the Day David B.

Sun, Feb 17th: U11 Local Cup: Kilreen Celtic 10, Blarney U11Bs 1. Ballyphehane Park, 10:30am F. Bevan

Going out on the day short four regular players Blarney knew it would be back’s to the wall stuff. Despite losing heavily to this premier league team,  there was some fine displays on the day. Dan H came in for one of the missing players and has given the management team plenty of reason to keep his starting place. In a day where not much went right for the lads they did themselves proud when in the last few minute’s they showed that "down was not out". It was Blarney who were attacking and in a good move down the wing John and Dean played a nice one two feeding into Shaun in the box who drew the push in the back from the full back to win the spot kick. Ryan stepped up to slot the ball past the keeper. Great spirit lads and lets keep an eye on those away performances.

Sun, Feb 3rd: U11 Divn 6: Leeside Knockraha 6, Blarney 0, Knockraha, 2:00pm

Blarney’s poor away record continued in this Div 6 game. Perhaps a disadvantage of having a fine pitch at home, Blarney struggled to come to terms with the conditions on the day up in Knockraha. The conditions must have lead in some way. Regrettably, 3 of the Blarney players were booked on the day. mostly down to the poor condition leading to misplaced tackles. To be fair however, Leeside/Knockraha just got on with it and deserved to take all 3 points on the day. Some good efforts were made by the likes of Dean, John O, Andrew and Blarney’s best on the day if not the Man of the Match for not giving up and running at the defence whenever possible David Braham.

Sat 26th Jan Challenge Game: Blarney U11Bs 2, St Mary's 2,  O'Shea Park A/W

In a turn around from last weeks game it was Blarney who found themselves 2 down at half time. Truth be told this could have been 4 or 5 with Blarney being reduced to just one shot at goal in the whole half from Shaun. We were lucky to have had some good defensive displays from the likes of Aaron, Cillian, Andrew, Gavin and of course Jamie in goal. In the 2nd half and with the ability to use all six subs there on the day Blarney came back into the game with Jamie O’D and Ryan both having chances to bring their team back into the game before Terry took a clearance from the Mary’s keeper and played it to Cian who put it into the empty net. The constant pressure from Blarney paid off when Ryan Kely was upended in the box to win a spotter for his team and Cian stepped up to bring his team level. Man of the Match Ryan.

Sat 19th Jan, U11 Divn 6: Blarney U11Bs 2 Strand 2, O'Shea Park A/W

Blarney started this game so well, having a lot of the early play and taking the lead after 15mins from a corner taken by David Braham coming thru to Cian who slotted it away to bringing his goal tally to 3 for the season. This brings Cian level with Terry who has also struck the back of the net 3 times this season. Cian nearly got a second a few mins later when good work from Ryan and Matthew F on the wing crossing for Cian who volleyed just over the bar. Just after the break Blarney got the 2nd when again Matthew F crossed to find David on the back post, Unfortunately the lads have found out that a 2 goal lead is not enough and when you take your eye off the ball and give away a soft goal then you lose your shape and are on the back foot for the rest of the game. To give Strand credit when they got the goal back they played the better football and deserved to get the equalizer. Blarney will know however that they left 2 points out the gate on Saturday when they didn’t finish off the game when they were on top. Man of the Match…John O’Donovan

Sat 24th Nov- U11 Divn 6: Buttevant 5 Blarney B’s 1, Abbeyview

Unfortunately Blarney U11B’s lost their undefeated league record over the weekend going down 5-1 away to Buttevant. In a game that who won the toss had a lot to do with who would win the game, it was Buttevant who won the toss and opted to play with the hill and the aid of the strong wind and raced into an early two goal lead inside the 1st 10 mins. Blarney then began to adapt to the conditions and shore up their defence for the remainder of the half Barney's  defence was under treat for nearly all the half except for the one great break from midfield from Ryan Kiely who took the Buttevant back line on. He cut down his wing and then pulled inside for a shot which unfortunately struck the the side netting. In the 2nd half Blarney believed they could get back in the game with the hill and wind, but left too many gaps at the back as they pressed for the priceless 1st goal. Unfortunately it was Buttevant who got the killer goal to end the game. Blarney kept trying to the end but the more they went looking for goals, the easier it was for Buttevant to break to score again. At 5-0 and 10 mins to go it could have been a lot worse but in Blarney did get some reward for their troubles when a free kick from Jamie at the edge of his box came thru to Terry Madden who beat the offside trap and ran on shooting from outside the box for the best goal of the game. Blarney’s best of the day Ryan Kiely.

Sat, 10th Nov: Blarney U11Bs 4, Richmond 2

In a tight start to the game, it was Richmond who got the opener after 15mins when a defensive mix up caused a goal. But the lads didn’t let the heads go down and inside 2 mins were back level when a lob shot from the edge of the box from Shaun caught the keeper on the line. 2 mins later another shot from Shaun fell to Ryan K who finished well into the corner. Blarney got their third late on in the half when a cross from Ryan K fell to Cian who slotted it away well. 3-1 at half time. In the 2nd half Richmond always looked a threat and on the 40 min got it back to 3-2. Further Richmond goals were thwarted however by Jamie O'C who performed very well, coming off his line many times to keep Blarney's slender lead. Blarney had a few chances to kill the game with David B, Terry & Cian all coming close, But finally the 4th goal came when a thru ball from Man of the Match Jamie H to Terry. Terry picked up the the pace, raced towards the Richmond area and smashed it past the keeper when he was thru 1 on 1.

Sat, 13th Oct U11: U11 Divn 6: Blarney U11Bs 1, Wilton Utd  A 1. O'Shea Park All Weather. I

In the first ever competitive Cork School Boys league game to be played on the new All-Weather pitch, Blarney & Wilton played out a very entertaining game which no side deserved to loose. Wilton started the better a got the opener. Their bright start was deserved when after 15 mins, Blarney failed to clear their lines and the goalmouth scramble that resulted with the ball in the back of the net. Blarney however, having gone behind, started to play some good football and when Matthew K played a great first -  time ball thru the Wilton defence,  Cian was there to finish coolly into the corner of the net levelling it up before halftime. Over the 2nd half, all 5 subs were introduced to try and push for the winner and Blarney had a lot of chances to clinch it but the Wilton defence was well marshalled and the goal wouldn’t come. In the last attack of the game, it was Wilton who had the best chance when their player was thru 1 on 1 with Jamie O'C in goal but Jamie came from his line well a stood tall long enough to force the striker to shoot saving the point for his team. The best on the day were Gavin & Cian

Sat, 29th Sept: U11 National Cup: Blarney U11Bs 2, Ballincollig Bs 4

In a good game played by both teams Blarney got of to a great start when Anthony Cahill scored a great goal after 15mins catching the Ballincollig defenders on the break. Blarney players, having taken the lead, fell asleep and their lead was short lived as Ballincollig came back with goal of their own 5mins later and then on the stroke of half time scored another to be 2-1 down at the break. To the lads credit they came out in the 2nd half and got the equalizer with as good a goal as has been seen in O'Shea Park at any level when Terry Madden curled a ball with the outside of his right boot bringing it around a defender and the outside of the post curling it back inside again beating a diving goalie... "A Great Goal". But the legs went from the lads and Ballincollig scored with 10 minutes left and as the lads went looking for another equalizer Ballincollig broke again to score again to kill the game. Blarney’s best of the day were Cian O'Donnell and Aaron O'Driscoll.

Sun, Sept 16th: U11 Divn 6: Mallow U11As 0, Blarney U11Bs 0, Town Park, T. Condon. 11:45

Blarney United U11A's began their league programme with a tough away trip to Mallow. After a nervous start, Blarney began to get a grip on the game. Their defence was very well marshalled by Gavin Kilgore and Dean Sheehan, with the industrious Jamie Higgins and Sean O'Brien in midfield. The away team had a Jamie O'Donovan goal disallowed for offside midway through the first half which many on the line thought was a bit harsh. Anthony Cahill was a constant threat and Blarney continued to create chances but the Mallow keeper kept everything out. Mallow were glad to get to halftime level. Blarney began the second half well and continued to press but could not get past the keeper. Blarney captain and outstanding goalkeeper Jamie O'Connor pulled off an excellent save midway through the second half to keep a tough Mallow side at bay. Blarney continued to press and after introducing their 5 subs they grew in strength and pushed on for what would have been a well deserved winner right to the final whistle. The whole team were congratulated for their efforts on the day and they can only push on from their excellent start.
