FAI SUMMER SOCCER SCHOOL IN BLARNEY

JULY 14-18

For the 5th consecutive year, Blarney United will host an FAI Summer Soccer School in O'Shea Park. Cost is €99 per child. One change this year is that there will be no "walk -ons" permitted. So my advise is to book early since the club will be unable to add extra children once the camp is full. The only method for booking is via the FAI website www.fai.ie or via the call centre on 1890-653653.

The great Charlie Hurley was a surprise and very welcome visitor to O’Shea Park on Sunday when Blarney United held a special ceremony with the help of Niall Quinn to inaugurate their new €500,000 all-weather pitch.

Charlie Hurley is currently in Ireland with Sunderland and the former Republic of Ireland international was brought along to O’Shea Park by the current Sunderland Chairman, Niall Quinn, much to the delight of the club officers, members and supporters.

Hurley, who was born in Devonshire Avenue, Cork, and was brought to London as a child when his parents emigrated, played for Millwall and Sunderland.

He played 40 times for Ireland between 1957 and 1969 and captained the team on occasion. He was also manager of the team briefly and was one of the greatest defenders ever to wear Ireland’s international shirt.

He had the distinction of being voted “Player of the Millennium” by the fans of both Millwall and Sunderland in the year 2000. He is such an icon in Sunderland that the Chairman’s suite is called the ‘Charlie Hurley Suite’ and a restaurant within the ground for the fans is also named after him.

The presence of both Quinn and Hurley elevated the opening ceremony at O’Shea Park to a marvellous level and contributed to the success of a venture that leaves Blarney United with two full-sized pitches, complete with floodlights.

The synthetic playing surface was supplied by Norwegian company, PST Sport and Blarney United confidently expect to receive confirmation that it meets with FIFA standards. The floodlighting system that illuminates both playing pitches was imported from USA.

Club Chairman, Jim McCarthy, presided over the ceremony and welcomed the guests that included the Chief Executive of the FAI, Mr. John Delaney.

Mr. Delaney paid tribute to the voluntary officers and committee members of the club and in complimenting them on their foresight and courage he said the upgraded facilities now enabled him promise the club that the Republic of Ireland would play an under-age international at O’Shea Park within the next twelve months.
