Recent Match Reports

19/Feb: U17 Div 1: Midleton 1, Blarney 95s 3

A beautiful Sunday afternoon for football and Blarney's play matched the weather. Right from the off, Blarney pressed, parried and pilfered every ball. Their work rate alone was to be admired but with the work came the time to be able to move the ball about the pitch, to hold possession and to be a constant threat to Middleton's defence. Moving the ball quickly quickly into attack Blaney varied the method from a straight forward ball over the top to a slick set of 1 touch passes through the middle or out through the wings. Jack and Alan controlled any situation that came their way, with Alan popping out in front to rob the ball or Jack calmly negating the Midleton attack. Conor and David seemed to grow in confidence as the match progressed. Despite the speed and quality of Midleton's wingers, the two full backs punted when necessary and held possession when the opportunity presented. Both Eoghan and Davidz linked with their full backs providing protection when necessary and constantly switching defence into attack when the opportunity presented. Jake, Eric and Lorcan won almost every battle in midfield, leading inexorably to the victory born out of ability coupled with honest to God, hard work. Blarney set pieces were always a threat in the first half and it was from one that Eric stole his first of the day. Blarney had hit cross bar upright, everything but the net. But when Lorcan fizzed in a ball into the 6 yard box; when the ball broke Eric calmly raised his foot and guided the ball into the net and Blarney into a well - deserved lead. James chased down every ball turning the centre halves, inside and out. It was his determination, just before the break, that led to a Blarney penalty which was slotted away for Eric's and Blarney's 2nd. Midleton got one back with 20 mins to go from a freakish 40 yard free kick off the left side line that beat goal keeper, defenders and attackers alike to somehow end up in the Blarney net. With 15 to go Dylan and Shaun came on for Conor and James, not becuase of their performance but simply to give the subs the go they deserved. Dylan slotted in easily clearing up any ball that came down his side. Shaun, as always, was a thorn in Midleton's side. His energy, speed and enthusiasm bamboozled Midleton and it was one of his breaks that led to Blarney's 2nd penalty of the day. Unfortunately, he could not convert it but the ever - alert Davidz slotted the follow - up under the keeper and secured 3 great points for Blarney with a well - deserved 3-1 away win that moved them ahead of Midleton and into 5th place.

22/Oct: Goals from James and Eoghan secured the 2-1 home win for the 95s in their U17s Division 1 clash with high - flying Bandon. Blarney went into the game with only 6 points from 6 games whereas Bandon went in with 9 from 4. Blarney's first game from a corner when Lorcan whizzed one in from the left and James, not renowned for his heading prowess, showed determination to drive past defender and attackers alike, onto the ball and clung a clean header past the keeper's outstretched left hand. Blarney continued to dominate the first half and took a 1-0 lead into half time. Bandon came out strong in the 2nd half and their centre forward who had been a speedy threat all evening, turned the CH and slotted passed Cian into the bottom left hand corner. Blarney initially looked shaken but showed steel and determination to drive on for the winner. This came from Eoghan's left foot when he drove determinedly drove at the Bandon RB / CH channel and drove the ball into the left side of the goal. In truth, Blarney had the best of the  game, though Bandon always looked dangerous on the break. Pleasingly Blarney saw out the game with the 2-1 score line. Next stop Richmond away on Saturday at 10:45 in Waterfall.
